The hidden message of gum disease. If your dentist says you have periodontal disease, you may have an even more serious problem: diabetes. In a recent study of 2,923 adults from NYU College of Dentistry and Nursing, 93% of those who had periodontitis were at high risk for diabetes, compared with just 63% of those without it. The culprit may be inflammation, says lead researcher Shiela M. Stauss PhD. If you’re diagnosed with gum disease, get a blood sugar test. Diabetes is often symtomless, but the earlier it’s discovered, the easier it is to prevent long term complications.

Anyone who happened to visit the office on a Wednsday afternoon recently may have noticed the waiting area to be a little cramped. Dr. Fine and staff have been donating their services to help the children of St. Peter’s Village, a local orphange. In addition to addressing problems at hand, the doctors and staff are working to educate the children on better home care and nutrition. “It’s nice to do some good for those less fortunate in your community” said Dr. Fine when asked about the sessions.
In recent years, the public has come under attack by all types of industry specific advertising. The pharmaceutical industry, for example, has spent millions of dollars to make patients ask doctors for drugs by name. Dentistry is no different. 1. Your dentist may not be as educated as you think.
Dentistry has changed a lot since your dentist graduated from dental school. There have been major advances in most materials used in fillings, bonding and root canals.
