Fosamax: Health Warning

Fosamax (generic name- Alendronate) is a type of drug known as bisphosphonates used to treat osteoporosis in Post menopausal women. Although Fosamax and other bisphosphonates are designed to strengthen bone, for Reasons not yet understood, they can have the reverse effect and weaken bones instead. This condition is a serious bone disease called osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ) or “dead jaw.”
The food and Drug Administration and Novartis,the manufacturer of bisphosphonates used in cancer chemotherapy, issued a warning letter to health care professionals on September 24,2004.
Symptoms of osteonecrosis of the jaw(ONJ) or “dead jaw” include:
