Drill Less Dentistry

What is Kinetic Cavity Preparation (KCP™)?

It’s a new system that uses a stream of kinetic particles to prepare teeth for restorations. It efficiently prepares cavity sites, removes enamel, dentin, and restorative materials as well as preparing surfaces for bonding. It can normally be used without anesthesia.

How does it work?

The KCP™ (kinetic cavity preparation) system employs kinetic energy, the energy mass in motion. Minute particles of alpha alumina are propelled by compressed air at a rate of more than 4.3 million particles per second and delivered via a lightweight handpiece. Instead of grinding away tooth structure like the drill, the KCP™ gently and precisely sprays away the decay.

What kind of procedures can it perform?

The KCP™ is used for a number of restorative procedures, including:

  • Preparing cavities for composite restorations
  • Removing old composite restorations
  • Partially removing composite restorations and facilitating rebonding at the failure site
  • Preparing pit and fissures for sealing
  • Preparing enamel or dentin for bonding (in lieu of etching acid)

What advantages does the KCP™ offer?

  • The KCP™ allows early intervention and conservation of healthy tooth structure.
  • It reduces the need for anesthesia, resulting in greater patient comfort and acceptance of treatment.
  • The reduced need for anesthesia also eliminates the waiting period, enhancing productivity.
  • Prior to the placement of composite fillings, it prepares the tooth for bonding by modifying the tooth surface, eliminating the step of acid etching.
  • It leaves the operating field relatively dry, a critical advantage during the placement of composites.
  • It safely modifies dentin and doubles bond strength.
  • It also reduces the risk of microfracturing and chipping which some experts believe can lead to premature restorative failures.
  • Reduces or eliminates a number of factors contributing to patient discomfort, including pressure, vibration and heat.
  • Allows the dentist to treat multiple sites in the mouth during a single visit, adding to efficiency. This is not possible with conventional instruments requiring anesthesia.
