Clayton Chan:
“Regarding what is neuromuscular dentistry? – As the Father of Neuromuscular Dentistry (Dr. Bernard Jankelson), the one that coined the term Neuromuscular Dentistry, said – if you can measure it, it is a fact, if you can’t it is just an opinion. That is how he defined neuromuscular dentistry, using objective measuring and recording methods to scientifically support his position.
Neuromuscular Dentistry is a medical paradigm utilizing diagnosis and treatment of occlusal problems that takes into consideration the status and influences of masticatory muscles. Generic bio-physiologic laws of muscle function and resting modes can be correlated to an optimal physiologic position of the temporomandibular joint and occlusion (the bite). It is these principles that can be skillfully applied to all facets of dentistry including TMD, Orthodontics and Restorative Dentistry as well as Prosthetic Dentistry. With the advancing and popularization of NMD in this country, Canada, Australia (thanks to Bill D and all the many LVI dentist’s), and abroad over the past 40 some years, many clinicians have been finding interest in such and began to identify themselves as performing NM Dentistry.
Neuromuscular Dentistry in its purist sense denoted the application of objective measurements of known physiologic phenomenon to better deliver an occlusal result that defined an optimally synergistic relationship between the teeth, temporomandibular joints and masticatory muscles. Today, many have applied the meaning down to its broadest implication, adapting it to their own understanding and comfort levels. Diluting the profound sophistications of the bio-physiologic responses of the human masticatory system. This was the focus of study in early days. Many other camps in dentistry today consider themselves neuromuscular and teach their version of neuromuscular dentistry.”
