The Four Main Benefits of Electric Toothbrushes

As holistic dentists, we have promoted the use of electric toothbrushes for many years now. They clean better, get to more parts of the mouth than a manual toothbrush and can clean away a lot more plaque than a manual toothbrush. But that isn’t all.

Here are what we think are the five main benefits of an electric toothbrush over a manual one.

Thorough cleaning

Electric toothbrushes oscillate, meaning they rotate the cleaning head very quickly. This movement has been proven beneficial to cleaning the teeth and removing plaque. On average, an electric toothbrush will remove between 10 and 20 percent more plaque than a manual toothbrush.

The brush head on an electric toothbrush is designed to hug the tooth and access all teeth from all directions. Used in conjunction with a good dental health regimen, they will help keep your teeth clean and healthy.

Access

Most of us know that getting into some areas of our mouth and cleaning with a manual toothbrush can be difficult. We may be able to get the brush in, but it’s difficult to brush properly. An electric toothbrush solves all that. If the head can access, the brush can clean.

That hugging action we just described makes cleaning the reverse side of teeth or those at the back a breeze too. Something a manual brush has trouble with.

Timing

Humans have trouble measuring time without a point of reference. This can manifest in cleaning teeth for too long, which isn’t usually a problem. It can also manifest in cleaning teeth for too little time, which can be a problem.

The built-in timer on an electric toothbrush helps measure time and indicates the optimum 2 minute period for you. All dentists recommend a cleaning period of around 2 minutes, two or three times a day.

Easy to use

As long as you remember to recharge your electric toothbrush and change the head regularly, there is nothing hard about using one. They were originally invented in 1954 specifically for those with mobility issues and that still holds true today.

All of the work is done for you with an electric toothbrush. Just talk to your dentist about how best to use your electric toothbrush and that’s all there is to it!

Also, not all electric toothbrushes are created equal.

We appreciate that electric toothbrushes are more expensive than manual ones. However, the increased effectiveness of them should mean, if used properly, your dental health will improve and your overall wellbeing will improve with it. What price can you put on that?
