Periodontal disease is more commonly known as gum disease and affects most of us at some point of our lives. It is also the most common reason for anyone to lose their teeth under the age of 50.

According to the U.S. Surgeon General, 85% of adults will suffer from some form of gum disease in their lifetime. Aesthetic Family Dentistry can work with you to make sure you’re not in this statistic.

What is Periodontal Disease?

Periodontal disease is an umbrella term for issues that can affect the gums. This can include gingivitis, acute necrotising ulcerative gingivitis and periodontitis.

Gingivitis causes red and swollen gums. It can also result in persistent bad breath, meaning bad breath that it isn’t resolved by brushing your teeth or mouthwash. Acute necrotising ulcerative gingivitis, ANUG for short, is a more severe form of gum disease that can come on suddenly. It generally needs antibiotics to clear completely.

If gingivitis isn’t treated, it leads to periodontitis. This is a situation where gums recede and teeth become loose as the jaw bone shrinks. This can result in discomfort or oversensitive teeth as the nerves are exposed.

More importantly, studies now link periodontal disease with more serious physical ailments such as heart disease, osteoporosis, stroke and diabetes. These is now clear evidence that indicates untreated gum disease can lead to more serious health challenges. That makes it even more important to have it checked and treated!

Symptoms of Periodontal Disease

The symptoms of periodontal disease vary. In the initial stages, the problem may be invisible and painless. It’s only once the situation has progressed that symptoms manifest.

Once they do appear, the symptoms of periodontal disease include:

  • Bleeding or swollen gums
  • Receding gums
  • Loose teeth
  • Pus or discharge between teeth
  • Persistent bad breath

Treatments of Periodontal Disease

There are several treatments that are effective against periodontal disease. As holistic dentists, we do everything we can to allow the body to heal and retain its natural balance.

Depending on the situation, a treatment for periodontal disease may include:

  • Ultrasonic and microsonic descaling of the teeth and removal of the biofilm.
  • Tissue laser treatment to remove infected gum tissue and kill  harmful bacteria
  • Topical and systemic antibiotic treatment

Treatments are relatively comfortable  and can be undertaken and completed in two to seven appointments depending on your own healing abilities. As well as treating the situation at hand, we can also provide guidance and advice on prevention and oral health.

Gentle Laser Periodontal Therapy for the 21st century

LAGT is an acronym for “Laser Assisted Gum Treatment. It’s the new, highly effective way of treating gum disease.

Traditionally, moderate to advanced periodontitis was treated with surgery that involved invasive curettage and root planning procedures. This meant cutting, scraping and stitching the gums. This procedure could often be uncomfortable and involved significant recovery time.

Although traditional procedures were successful, they weren’t an ideal experience for the patient. That’s what makes LAGT so effective.

It is:

  • Less invasive
  • More conservative
  • More predictable
  • State-of-the-art
  • Less uncomfortable, with no cutting, stitching, or bleeding
  • Superior to traditional techniques in promoting bone regeneration

We also offer Oral DNA and HPV testing to help determine the state of patients’ periodontal health, as well as detect any possible genetic proclivity toward periodontal disease. This testing also checks for the HPV virus.

Don’t ignore the symptoms of periodontal disease as it can lead to serious complications. Work with Aesthetic Family Dentistry to keep you and your mouth healthy and happy. We treat all our patients as individuals and will only prescribe treatments where absolutely necessary. There is no one size fits all approach here!
