What is a Biological or Holistic Dentistry?

In a nutshell, biological dentistry views your teeth and gums as an integrated part of your entire body, and any medical treatments performed takes this fact into account. The primary aim of this type of holistic dentistry is to resolve your dental problems while impacting the rest of your body as a little as possible.

Biological dentists should also be well aware of the dangers involved with certain dentistry materials embraced by conventional dentists, namely silver fillings.

Silver fillings are 50 percent mercury and are an extremely dangerous neurotoxin. Mercury is second only to Plutonium as a toxic element. Folks, it is a POISON. It is up to you to refuse them, or find a dentist who has switched to safer alternatives.

Holistic dentists use biocompatible materials that will not adversely impact your immune system. Beyond mercury, stainless steel and other metals continue to be used in the mouth by conventional dentistry even though they have been well established to have a cancer causing effect when used elsewhere in your body.

Further, metals commonly utilized in dental work such as crowns, mercury fillings and implants can be quite toxic. When placed in your mouth they are sitting in a medium of saliva, which turns your mouth into a charged battery.

We call this charge “Galvanic Toxicity”. Your brain is a collection of millions of nerve fibers that is essentially a battery emitting electrical charges throughout your body.

The Galvanic Toxicity in your mouth can bombard and over stimulate your brain. Common signs and symptoms of Galvanic Toxicity are a metallic taste in your mouth, an electric charge with utensils and insomnia.

Finding suitable materials to replace the metals currently used can be a challenge, but a knowledgeable biological dentist should be able to inform you of the latest, safe alternatives.

Homeopathy in Dentistry

I like using homeopathic remedies because they are very effective, safe, inexpensive and easy to use. I would like to write about a few of my favorite remedies. The varying potencies (strengths) are 30C, 200C, 1M and 10M. Taking a dose means 3 pellets (don’t touch with fingers- put in cap then into mouth) and let the pellets dissolve in your mouth. You could also put 2 pellets in 8 ounces of water, dissolve and swallow a large sip of water. This is considered one dose. This way you can take multiple doses as each sip is a dose. Do not have any food or drink for 10 minutes before or after taking a remedy. I recommend a higher potency for acute problems with 30C the lowest and 10M the highest. Always go from low to high potencies. Usually 1 to several doses taken a few hours apart is needed. The more acute the problem, the more remedy that is needed. If you have multiple doses of the same remedy, you can take, for example, a 30C dose, wait a few hours take a 200C wait a few hours, take a 1M dose, wait a few hours, then a 10M. This is SPORTS MEDICINE dosing and is a one time deal and very effective.

ARNICA MONTANA – This remedy is for trauma and bruising. For any dental surgery or heavy dental work, or injury, this works great. This remedy is a must in everyone’s home.

PHOSPHORUS – This remedy is great for sensitivity to anesthesia (shots or even being put to sleep). It is amazing for bleeding from anywhere in the body and is a great adjunct to arnica. This is also great if you are very sensitive to treatment.

GELSEMIUM – This remedy is a great “fear“ remedy and is great for fear of the dentist. It really does work!! I have used it on children with great success. ARGENTICUM NITRICUM – This is natural valium at its best. It is for anticipation anxiety and will relax even the most nervous patient. A must in my practice.

HYPERICUM – I use this for ” cut nerves” or dental pain, especially surgery or root canal therapy. Patients can take multiple doses as per pain. STAPHYSAGRIA – I use this for toothache pain if severe, and if hyericum is not effective.

MERCUROUS SOL OR VIV – As a biological dentist, I use this before safely removing mercury (amalgam) fillings to prevent any ill effects from this removal. Patients sent for mercury removal are usually very health challenged, and any exposure can cause problems. This is a great prevention.

CHAMOMILLA – This works great for a crying child when they are over-reacting greatly. It will relax them and get things under control.

RHUS TOX – For TMJ pain, stiff neck and back, this will relax the muscles. This rusty hinge remedy (when heat and movement make condition improve). This is a great arthritis remedy too.

The Link between Gum Disease & Heart Attacks
Gum Disease May Relate To Heart Attack Risk

Previous studies have found the incidence of heart disease is about twice as high in people in periodontal (gum) disease, but until recently no plausible cause had been suggested. Now studies indicate that the most common strain of bacteria in dental plaque may cause blood clots. When blood clots escape into the bloodstream, there is a relation to increased risk of heart attacks and other heart illnesses.

People with periodontal disease (over one half of the adult population) have an infection that causes chronic inflammation of the gums. Also, it is a path for these bacteria to enter the bloodstream.

A recent study describes the association between the heart disease and gum disease to be at least as strong as the linkage of heart disease to cholesterol, body weight, or smoking.

Incidence of periodontal disease
Unlike most diseases that give us early warning signs, gum disease progresses silently, often without pain. It may develop slowly or progress quite rapidly. More than half of all people over 18 have at least the early stages or periodontal disease. Even more frightening, after the age of 35, three out of four people are affected to some degree. Periodontal disease is an infection that destroys the gum surrounding your teeth and also destroys the supporting bone that holds your teeth in place.

What Other Health Concerns Are Related To Gum Disease
Bacteria in plaque have also been linked to:

  • Inflammation of the lining of the blood vessels that is known to lead to construction in the arteries
  • Infective endocarditis, a potentially fatal disease in which the inner lining of the heart becomes inflamed
  • Lung infections in people with chronic lung diseases
  • A weakened immune system that can slow wound healing and diminish a person’s response to hepatitis B and flu vaccines
  • A higher risk of delivering premature, low birth weight infants.
  • Tooth Loss
